Drake's Deal With The Weeknd 'Being Worked Out'

'What counts to me is the fact that the affiliation is so known,' Drizzy tells MTV News of fellow Toronto artist.

The Weeknd has a ton of fans, but Drake may be the biggest fan of them all. Of course, there is some bias: Drizzy embraced the Toronto singer last year and has since worked with him on fan favorites like "Crew Love," "The Ride" and "The Zone."

The two have even brought their respective OVO and XO cliques together to form OVOXO. So what's the real deal with Drake and the Weeknd?

"As far as on paper, it's all being worked out, but that's not really what counts anyway. What counts to me is the fact that the affiliation is so known, and that's all I really care about," Drake told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway during his May 17 tour stop in Houston.

The Young Money star didn't shed much light on the Weeknd's career, but then again, since the release of his breakout mixtape House of Balloons last year, the singer has been shrouded in mystery. Though he performed at Coachella last month and embarked on his own solo tour, the Weeknd has yet to give a definitive interview or released very many music videos. Still, Drake recognizes the magic they create together and whether or not he actually signs his Toronto running mate, he insists there will always be a union of some sort.

"I want to continue being involved in his career and vice versa and keep making music together, because you take songs like 'Crew Love' and 'The Zone,' that's what people wait all night to hear," he said.

Drizzy welcomed the "Wicked Games" vocalist onstage to perform with him during his Concord, California, stop in the Bay Area at the beginning of May. "If you want to talk about evolution — a quick evolution — that's definitely somebody who, everywhere I go, they love him," he said. "They're that loud every single night when I say the Weeknd's name and when he came out at the show in the Bay, it was crazy.

"We're definitely a family," Drake added. "It's definitely a Toronto thing. That's not changing at all."

Where should the Weeknd sign? Let us know in the comments!

(AP) ? The youngest person ever to qualify for the National Spelling Bee was running around in a stream with a friend, hunting for rocks. Suddenly, she came charging up the bank and headed straight for her mother.

"Hold on to that basalt," Lori Anne Madison said in a bossy 6-year-old's voice, "and do not drop it."

"Go away," her mother said playfully.

Sorina Madison held on the rock nonetheless, and soon was carrying more basalt and a nice hunk of quartz. "I can't carry the entire park," she eventually told her daughter.

Never mind. By then Lori Anne, wearing a green "Little Miss Sunshine" shirt, had joined up with more friends and had taken on a different quest, searching for snails, slugs, tadpoles, water striders, baby snakes and more as they splashed in the waters on a sunny day at the Scotts Run Nature Preserve in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.

"Oh my gosh, what is it? A water worm. A water worm! It's alive," said Lori Anne, her shoes soaked from more than an hour of exploring. "I need it in my collection. It's wonderful."

She is blonde and adorable and talks at 100 mph. In the last few weeks, she has won major awards in both swimming and math, but one accomplishment above all has made her an overnight national celebrity: This week, the precocious girl from Lake Ridge, Va., will be onstage with youngsters more than twice her age and twice her size as one of 278 spellers who have qualified for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

"She's like a teenager in a 6-year-old body," Sorina said. "Her brain, she understands things way ahead of her age."

It's hard to argue with that, especially after spending a couple of hours with her. There's been no need for Lori Anne's parents to push her to do anything ? because she's already way out in front dragging them along. Some kids are ahead of the curve physically, mentally or socially from a very young age. Lori Anne is the rare exception who defies the norms in every category.

She hit all her milestones early, walking and talking well before others in her playgroup. She was reading before she was 2. She swims four times a week, keeping pace with 10-year-old boys, and wants to be in the Olympics. When her mother tried to enroll her in a private school for the gifted, the headmaster said Lori Anne was just way too smart to accommodate and needed to be home-schooled.

"Once she started reading, that's when people started looking strange at us, in libraries, everywhere, she's actually fluently reading at 2, and at 2 ? she was reading chapter books," Sorina said. That meant an unexpected lifestyle change for the mother, a college professor who teaches health-related courses. Lori Anne now studies at home, mastering topics other kids her age won't touch for several years. She wants to be an astrobiologist, a combination of her two favorite subjects, astronomy and biology.

And she talks soooo fast, with well-formed diction and a touch of know-it-all confidence ? just like a teenager.

"She out-argues both of us, and my husband is a trial lawyer," Sorina said with a laugh.

Now there's another wrinkle: spelling bee fame. When Lori Anne spelled "vaquero" to win the regional bee in Prince William County in March, she set a new standard for youth in the national bee's 87-year-old history.

"It was shocking," Sorina said. "I didn't expect all the media attention. We're private people. We're regular people. It was intimidating. But I'm happy for her. She loves it and she does it because it's a passion, and we never push her into anything and want her to make her own choices."

Interviews can be boring for a 6-year-old, especially if it's a television setting where she has to sit and sit and sit, so she pulled the plug, telling her mother: "I want to go back to being a kid and playing with my friends."

So a detente was reached. Lori Anne was more than happy to let a reporter and photographer from The Associated Press tag along at a picnic with other gifted home-schooled children, but she craftily steered any questions about spelling back toward the joint pursuit of slimy things in the creek.

On all the attention she's getting: "I sort of didn't like it. I asked for no interviews but the media seems to be disobeying me, and that's why we're looking for snails and water slugs right now."

On why she wants to be an astrobiologist: "I'm going to sort of find life forms. And, plus, alien planets are new. But I need some slugs."

Asked to spell her favorite word, she raced through the letters of "sprachgefuhl" like a blur. Asked to spell it backward, she paused a bit and had to take her time, but she got it right.

"It's even crazier backwards than it is forwards," she said with a giggle, her hand holding a collection jar and her eyes focused on the wet rocks. "Now let's look for some slugs or snails."

By now, the jar contained a diversity of small living things, with the help of Lori Anne's friends. The children in the group are also smart and accomplished ? there's a boy who has been studying calculus at age 8 ? but there's something noteworthy about being in the bee.

"Are you that girl who won the spelling bee?" one boy asked.

"That's me," Lori Anne said.

No one is expecting Lori Anne to win the national bee this year. Just being there is a unique accomplishment, and making it beyond the preliminaries on Tuesday and Wednesday would be another stunning development. The veteran spellers, some as old as 15, have honed sophisticated study methods, spending hours daily over many months in their attempts to master as much of the unabridged dictionary as possible.

Lori Anne? She likes to study while jumping on her trampoline, with her mother calling out words.

"She doesn't sit at a table for hours to study anything. I mean, she's 6," Sorina said with laugh. "She's still a 6-year-old and we want to allow her to be a 6-year-old."

But, at this pace, she'll be a spelling bee force for years to come, one of those youngsters who returns for several years and becomes a familiar face on the ESPN broadcasts.

Asked how she thinks she'll do this year, Lori Anne simply answered "great" and kept on hunting.

There was one question she was more than happy to answer: How does she win all those arguments with her parents?

"I argue and argue and argue," she said, "until their brain is spinning."

Dicevo all?inizio, andiamoci coi piedi di piombo.

First ever Google Glasses video unveiled ? shot on a trampoline

project-glass

The first ever video shot with Google's Project Glass high-tech specs has been unveiled by the Internet giant. A trampoline is involved. And a bit of bouncing.

Google?s high-tech specs bounced back into the headlines on Friday when the company released a video shot by someone wearing the special glasses while using a trampoline.

The 15-second video was posted on Google+ this week, alongside a bunch of photos also taken with the specs.

Shot in 720p, viewers get to see a point-of-view shot of someone (presumably not Sergey Brin, though who knows?) wearing the glasses while bouncing up and down on a trampoline, throwing in a few backflips for good measure. And yes, the specs stay on.

The video (you can check it out below) displays none of the glasses? expected augmented reality features ? so no on-screen information about local weather conditions, no location shown on Google Maps and no ads featuring trampoline stores in the area.

Up to now Google has given little indication as to when the smartphone-on-your-face spectacles might be launched ? engineers no doubt still has much work to do on their development and design. There is also a dearth information regarding possible price, though we wouldn?t be surprised to see them costing around the same as a high-end smartphone.

After much speculation about the possibility of Google working on the creation of futuristic specs, the company finally came clean last month, announcing it was indeed developing AR glasses. Calling its endeavor Project Glass, Google said in a blog post that its plan is to ?help you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment.?

The Mountain View company has some competition though ? soon after it announced Project Glass, sunglasses maker Oakley piped up and said it too has been working on producing a pair of AR glasses. Oakley said it?s been developing its specs for the last 15 years. Let?s hope Google doesn?t take that long with its own design.

Hot Industry: Full-Service Restaurants | Best Outsourcing Partners

The restaurant industry will employ 12.9 million people this year, representing 10% of the total U.S. workforce, and making it one of the best industries for starting a business in this year.

Business Opportunities in Full-Service Restaurants

Getty

By the Numbers

2.8%: Sales increase in 2011, according to Technomic

6.3%: Profit expected for 2012, according to IBISWorld

12%: Share of survey respondents who plan to spend more on restaurants in 2012, according to Mintel?s 2012 Dining Out Report

$64 billion: Projected revenue by 2016, according to Sageworks

90,493: Number of enterprises projected for 2017, according to IBISWorld

0: Number of years full-service restaurants had a decrease in sales, according to Sageworks

93%: Share of restaurants with fewer than 50 employees, according to the National Restaurant Association

Why it?s hot:

Think about it: What?s for dinner? Not takeout. Not fast food. And definitely not a homemade meal.

Instead, the subtle hand of the economic recovery is inspiring Americans to pull up a chair at a neighborhood sit-down restaurant. In 2009, revenue earned by full-service restaurants declined by 6.8%, reflective of consumers? having less disposable income (and therefore showing preference for fast-food restaurants or eating at home), says Nima Samadi, senior analyst at IBISWorld, a market research organization specializing in long-range forecasting of industries and business environments.

Restaurants in this segment of the industry ?were the first to feel the pinch and the last to feel the recovery,? Samadi says.

Barriers to entry:

Although the full-service restaurant industry is ripe for growth, Samadi notes a saturated market as a big barrier to entry.

Another barrier: the significant day-to-day costs associated with running the business. According to Sageworks, a financial information company that provides industry data, the cost of sales, including inventory, direct labor, material, and other costs directly associated with the generation of revenue, will eat up nearly 41% of sales revenue.

Samadi says success can also be contingent on familiarity with the day-to-day operations. ?Especially with full-service (restaurants), the failure rates are pretty high for people that start a restaurant without any prior restaurant experience, or if they don?t hire someone that has the prior experience,? he says. ?I think expertise plays a pretty large role, and it?s a pretty good indicator of success.?

Fastest growing segment:

Need ideas for what kind of restaurant to start? Healthy eating continues to be popular, as well as offering locally sourced and locally grown foods, according to the National Restaurant Association?s ?What?s Hot in 2012? survey. Technomic, a food-service research and consulting firm, says the biggest trend for 2012 will be meals with a twist?whether comfort food with an ethnic spin or surprising tweaks to sandwiches. So go ahead, dig in.

Growth potential:

Industry sales-revenue has slowly recovered, growing 1.6% in 2010 and 2.8% in 2011, and it is projected to increase 4.5% this year and 5.5% in 2013. The National Restaurant Association expects the entire restaurant industry, not just full-service restaurants, in 2012 to book $632 billion in revenue and to employ 12.9 million. That would be a slight increase from 2011, and represent 10% of the U.S. work force. Plus, as the economy improves, Samadi says, restaurants should benefit from lower unemployment rates and higher levels of disposable income.

What is Social Networking? | Business Solutions Etc.

?Social networking, we have all likely heard of it before, but not everyone knows what it means? If you were asked to define what social networking was, would you be able to give an accurate definition. Unfortunately, most individuals cannot, even though it is likely that they participate in some form of social networking, especially online.

Social networking is defined as the grouping of individuals together into to specific groups, often like a small community or a neighborhood. Although social networking is possible in person, especially in schools or in the workplace, it is most popular online. This is because unlike most high schools, colleges, or workplaces, the internet is filled with millions, if not more, of individuals who are looking to meet other internet users and develop friendships.

When it comes to social networking online, websites are used. These websites are known as social networking websites. Social networking websites are, in a way, like an online community of internet users. Depending on the social networking website in question, many of these online community members share a common bond, whether that bond be hobbies, religion, or politics. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profiles or profile pages of other members or even contacting them.

The friends that you can make are just one of the many benefits to social networking online. Another one of those benefits includes diversity. Unlike in most schools or workplaces, the internet gives individuals, from all around the world, access to social networking sties. This means that although you are in the United States, you could develop an online friendship with someone in Japan. Not only will you make a new friend, you but may also learn a thing or two about a new culture.

As previously mentioned, social networking often involves grouping specific individuals or organizations together. While there are a number of social networking websites that focus on particular Internets, there are others that do not. These websites are often deemed traditional social networking websites. These types of websites typically have an open membership. This means that anyone can become a member, no matter what their hobbies, beliefs, or views are. However, once you are inside this online community, you can begin to create your own network of friends; thus eliminating others that do not meet your criteria.

If networking on the internet sounds like something you would be interested in, you are encouraged to learn more about it, such as the dangers of social networking. These dangers often involve online predators or individuals who claim to be someone that they are not. Although danger does exist with networking online, it also exists with networking out in the real world. As when you are meeting friends at a bar, school, or work, you are advised to proceed with caution online. By being aware of your surroundings and who you are talking to, you should be able safely enjoying social networking online.

Once you have learned everything that you feel you need to learn, about social networking online, you can begin to search for networking communities to join. This can easily be done by performing a standard internet search. Your search will likely return a number of results, including MySpace, Friend Wise, Friend Finder, Yahoo! 360, Facebook, Orkut, and Classmates.

(AP) ? Grammy-winning folk musician Doc Watson was in critical condition Thursday at a North Carolina hospital after falling at his home in Deep Gap earlier this week.

Watson's daughter, Nancy, told The Associated Press that the 89-year-old Watson fell Monday at his home. She said he didn't break any bones but that he was "real sick."

A spokeswoman at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem said Arthel Watson ? Arthel is his legal first name ? was in critical condition Thursday.

The blind singer and guitarist has won several Grammys, including a lifetime achievement award. He also received the National Medal of the Arts.

Watson also received the North Carolina Award, the state's highest civilian award, in 1986. He and his family received a North Carolina Heritage Award in 1986.

He's known as a master of the flatpicking style of guitar playing and for starting Merlefest, an annual gathering of musicians in North Wilkesboro named after his son, a musician who died in a tractor accident in 1985.

Doc Watson's wife of more than 60 years, RosaLee, has been in a nursing home since last year, Nancy Watson said. The two married when she was 15 and he was 23.

"She saw what little good there was in me and there was little," Doc said in an interview with The Associated Press in 2000. "I'm awful glad she cared about me, and I'm awful glad she married me."

Wayne Martin, executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council, said Watson takes southern Appalachian forms of music, such as ballad singing, old-time string music and bluegrass, and makes them accessible.

"He takes old music and puts his own creativity on it," Martin said. "It retained its core, yet it felt relevant to people today."

Romney opens new front vs Obama: schools are failing

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney opened a new front on Wednesday in his fight against President Barack Obama, accusing him of presiding over a failing U.S. education system in the grip of union bosses who refuse to accept reforms.

In a rare diversion from his campaign focus on the weak U.S. economy, Romney laid out an education plan in a speech that represented his most overt appeal to date to Hispanic voters who have largely sided with the Democratic incumbent.

Although he trails Obama by a huge margin among Hispanics, Romney's address to a Hispanic business group avoided mentioning a top priority for them: how to overhaul the country's immigration system.

Romney said millions of American children are getting a "third-world education" and offered proposals that he said would reward teachers for their results instead of their seniority. And he would give parents greater choice of where to send their children to school and take other steps to reduce the influence of powerful teachers' unions.

"I believe the president must be troubled by the lack of progress since he took office. Most likely, he would have liked to do more. But the teachers unions are one of the Democrats' biggest donors - and one of the president's biggest campaign supporters. So, President Obama has been unable to stand up to union bosses - and unwilling to stand up for kids," Romney said.

Meanwhile, at a rally in Denver, Obama kept up criticism of his opponent's record as a job-cutting business executive - a prime target for the president and his re-election campaign.

"I think he has learned the wrong lessons," Obama said, pressing a populist attack on what he called Romney's bad ideas for the U.S. economy.

"His working assumption is if CEOs, and wealthy investors like him get rich, the rest of us automatically will too," he said.

There has been increasingly heated rhetoric between the two in recent days over Romney's time as the head of the corporate buyout company Bain Capital.

Obama made only a brief mention of education, repeating his plans to enhance ties between community colleges and businesses and saying his goal was that "by the end of this decade more of our citizens hold a college degree than any other nation on Earth."

Romney's pivot to education comes during a battle in Washington over student loan programs. Obama's Democrats are pushing for extending low-interest loan rates for federal loans to avoid a doubling of the rates from 3.4 percent. A compromise with Republicans is expected by the July 1 deadline.

The former Massachusetts governor is neck-and-neck with Obama in polls, a prelude to what could be a close election.

HISPANICS AND EDUCATION

Hispanics will likely be crucial to the election.

A Wall Street Journal/NBC/Telemundo poll showed Obama leading Romney with Hispanic voters 61 percent to 27 percent. Romney is only now starting a push to try to peel some of them away because of their potential influence in swing states like New Mexico, Florida, Colorado, Virginia and North Carolina.

But Romney went almost an hour at his event without mentioning the U.S. immigration system and how he would deal with 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States.

In the Republican primary battle, Romney and his rivals upset many Hispanics by adopting hardline immigration positions. Romney called for the "self-deportation" of illegal immigrants.

On Wednesday he stuck to education, also a top issue for Hispanics but one that rarely ignites passion in the campaign.

In the meantime, Obama, whose re-election largely hinges on what happens with the fragile economy and high unemployment, accused Romney's Republicans of "bamboozling folks into thinking that they are the responsible, fiscally disciplined party."

Seeking to counter Republican charges of wasteful spending, Obama insisted that the rate of spending has grown less under Democratic than under Republican administrations.

Hispanic Republican strategists said Romney was wise to keep his focus on education and the economy, noting that in several polls, Hispanic voters rate the economy well ahead of immigration as the issue they care about most.

"Clearly, it appears that Governor Romney has chosen to focus on what the vast majority of U.S. Hispanics and Latinos feel is of highest priority," said Daniel Garza, from The Libre Initiative non-profit group.

Standing before a banner that read "A Chance for Every Child," Romney laid out an education plan that relies heavily on bolstering and improving the No Child Left Behind education law engineered by Obama's Republican predecessor, George W. Bush.

Romney made more money and more access to charter schools the centerpiece of his platform, but he launched a strong attack on teachers' unions. "The teachers' unions are the clearest example of a group that has lost its way," Romney said.

"COME ON MITT, THINK!

The education speech was a welcome break for Romney, who has been under a barrage of accusations from Democrats that he killed blue-collar jobs when he was head of Bain in the 1990s.

Bain bought and restructured companies, sometimes resulting in a loss of jobs. But Romney says the company more than made up for that by helping to establish companies that became big employers, like office supplies store Staples.

He told Time magazine business experience gave him savvy to fix the economy and he welcomed scrutiny of his record. "The fact is that I spent 25 years in the private sector. And that obviously teaches you something that you don't learn if you haven't spent any time in the private sector," he said.

While Romney often polls ahead of Obama on the economy, the president's foreign policy credentials weigh in his favor compared to the ex-governor, who has little foreign experience.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell criticized Romney for taking advice from foreign policy advisers who are "quite far to the right," in an sign of lingering strains from his tenure under President George W. Bush.

He made clear that he is not happy with some of the neo-conservatives who are advising Romney and took exception to a recent comment from Romney that Russia is the top U.S. geopolitical threat.

"Come on Mitt, think! That isn't the case," said Powell.

Just How Big Was the Biggest Earthquake?

This week marks the anniversary of the largest earthquake ever recorded ? a magnitude-9.5 earthquake that ripped along the coast of southern Chile on May 22, 1960.

The colossal quake and the powerful tsunami that followed killed more than 1,400 people and left 2 million homeless in Chile. And its devastation reached far beyond South America.

The tsunami swept across the Pacific Ocean, wreaking havoc in Hawaii, the Philippines and Japan; a day after the earthquake, walls of water up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) high rushed ashore at Honshu, Japan's main island, destroying 1,600 homes and killing 138 people.

The colossal quake was what is known as a megathrust earthquake. These giant quakes, the most powerful quakes the planet is capable of unleashing, occur along subduction zones, where one tectonic plate dives beneath another. [The 10 Biggest Earthquakes in History]

In this case, the quake was caused when a 620-mile-long (1,000 kilometers) stretch of the Nazca plate, an oceanic plate that forms a large swath of the Pacific Ocean floor, lurched deeper beneath the South American plate, producing the only 9.5-magnitude quake on record.

So just how big is a 9.5? An earthquake magnitude video, created with an animation from Nathan Becker, an oceanographer at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, offers a simple way to understand the vast differences between one magnitude and the next.

Essentially, each successive magnitude is 33 times larger than the last. That means a magnitude-8.0 earthquake is 33 times stronger than a 7.0, and a magnitude-9.0 earthquake is 1,089 (33 x 33) times more powerful than a 7.0 ? the energy ramps up fast.

Magnitude measures
Although figuring out an earthquake's power requires lots of complicated math and lots of data, magnitude boils down to three basic factors: area, distance and friction.

"It's about the physical properties of the fault," said Paul Earle, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

To get the magnitude, Earle told OurAmazingPlanet, you multiply the area of the fault that slipped ? how much real estate moved ? by the distance it moved and by the amount of friction on the fault.

Egyptians vote in first free presidential election

CAIRO (AP) ? More than 15 months after autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak's ouster, Egyptians streamed to polling stations Wednesday to freely choose a president for the first time in generations. Waiting hours in line, some debated to the last minute over their vote in a historic election pitting old regime figures against ascending Islamists.

A sense of amazement at having a choice in the Arab world's first truly competitive presidential election pervaded the crowds in line. At the same time, voters were fervent with expectations over where a new leader will take a country that has been in turmoil ever since its ruler for nearly 30 years was toppled by mass protests.

Some backed Mubarak-era veterans, believing they can bring stability after months of rising crime, a crumbling economy and bloody riots. Others were horrified by the thought, believing the "feloul" ? or "remnants" of the regime ? will keep Egypt locked in dictatorship and thwart democracy.

Islamists, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood, saw their chance to lead a country where they were repressed for decades and to implement their version of Islamic law. Their critics recoiled, fearing theocracy.

"You can't tell me, 'Vote for this or else you're a sinner!'" Wael Ramadan argued with an Islamist-backer in line at a polling station in the impoverished Cairo neighborhood of Basateen. "We never said that," protested the man. "Yes, you did," Ramadan shot back.

"The revolution changed a lot, for good and bad," Ramadan, a 40-year-old employee at a mobile phone company, said afterward. "The good thing is all this freedom. We are here and putting up with the trouble of waiting in line for electing a president. My vote matters ... Now we want a president who has a vision."

A field of 13 candidates is running in Wednesday and Thursday's voting. The two-day first run is not expected to produce an outright winner, so a runoff between the two top vote-getters will be held June 16-17. The winner will be announced June 21. Around 50 million people are eligible to vote. Turnout so far appeared moderate, and Wednesday's vote was extended another hour.

An Islamist victory will likely mean a greater emphasis on religion in government. The Muslim Brotherhood, which already dominates parliament, says it won't mimic Saudi Arabia and force women to wear veils or implement harsh punishments like amputations. But it says it does want to implement a more moderate version of Islamic law, which liberals fear will mean limitations on many rights.

Many of the candidates have called for amendments in Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel, which remains deeply unpopular. None is likely to dump it, but a victory by any of the Islamist or leftist candidates in the race could mean strained ties with Israel and a stronger stance in support of the Palestinians in the peace process. The candidates from the Mubarak's regime ? and, ironically, the Brotherhood, which has already held multiple talks with U.S. officials ? are most likely to maintain the alliance with the United States.

The real election battle is between four front-runners.

The main Islamist contenders are Mohammed Morsi of the powerful Brotherhood and Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, a moderate Islamist whose inclusive platform has won him the support of some liberals, leftists and minority Christians.

The two secular front-runners are both veterans of Mubarak's regime ? former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq and former foreign minister Amr Moussa.

A major worry is whether either side will accept victory by the other. Many Islamists have warned of new protests if Shafiq wins, saying his victory could only come from fraud. Some believe the ruling military is determined to see Shafiq, a former air force commander, win.

"Over my dead body will Shafiq or Moussa win. Why not just bring back Mubarak?" said Saleh Zeinhom, a merchant backing Abolfotoh. "I'm certain we'll have a bloodbath after the elections cause the military council won't hand power to anyone but Shafiq."

So far, there were only a few reports of violations of election rules Wednesday, mainly candidates' backers campaigning near polling stations ? though observers said it was far less than during parliament voting. In some villages around Cairo on Wednesday, Brotherhood backers were seen whispering Morsi's name to voters in line.

Along with several Egyptian groups, three international monitoring organizations, including the U.S.'s Carter Center, were observing the vote, along with multiple Egyptian groups. Former President Jimmy Carter, the center's head, visited a polling station in the ancient Cairo district of Sayeda Aisha.

The election's winner will face a monumental task. The economy has been sliding. Crime has increased. Labor strikes have proliferated.

And the political turmoil is far from over. The military, which took power after Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011, has promised to hand authority to the election winner by the end of June. But many fear it will try to maintain considerable political say. The fundamentals of Mubarak's police state remain in place, including the powerful security forces.

"The pressure will continue. We won't sleep. People have finally woken up. Whoever the next president is, we won't leave him alone," said Ahmed Maher of the group April 6, a key architect of the 18-day uprising against Mubarak.

The country must still write a new constitution to define the president's powers. That was supposed to be done already, but was delayed after Islamists tried to dominate the constitution-writing panel, prompting a backlash that scuttled the process for the moment.

The Muslim Brotherhood is hoping for a Morsi victory to cap their political rise, after parliament elections last year gave them nearly half the legislature's seats.

In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, microbuses run by the Brotherhood ferried women supporters to the polls in the poor neighborhood of Abu Suleiman, one of the group's strongholds. The women, in conservative headscarves or covered head to toe in black robes and veils that hid their faces, filed into the station.

"I want to give the Brotherhood a chance to rule," said Aida Ibrahim, a veteran Brotherhood member helping voters find their station. "If it doesn't work, they will be held accountable," she said.

Some Brotherhood supporters cited the group's years of providing charity to the poor ? including reduced-price meat, and free medical care. "Whoever fills the tummy gets the vote," said Naima Badawi, a housewife sitting on her doorstep watching voters in Abu Sir, one of the many farming villages near the Pyramids being sucked into Cairo's urban sprawl.

But some who backed the Brotherhood in the parliament election late last year have since been turned off.

In many places, the argument went right up to the doorsteps of the schools where voting was held. In the village of Ikhsas, outside Cairo, a group of neighbors got into a friendly but frank debate outside the polling station.

"I voted Brotherhood for parliament but I find they are inflexible in their opinions and want to take everything. I can't now find them in the country's top job," Bassem Saber, a 31-year-old accountant dressed in the traditional local robes, told the circle of men. He now backs Abolfotoh, who was ejected from the Brotherhood last year.

Khaled el-Zeini, a Brotherhood backer, said people were being unfair because the military blocked the group's majority in parliament from forming a government.

"We loved them and wanted them but we realized they are all about monopolizing power," Fares Kamel, a local trader, interjected, referring to the Brothers.

The secular young democracy activists behind the anti-Mubarak uprising have been at a loss, with no solid candidate reflecting their views.

In Cairo, 27-year-old Ali Ragab supports a leftist, Hamdeen Sabahi ? because the poor "should get a voice" ? but he admitted Sabahi didn't stand much of a chance.

He said his father and his father's friends were voting for Shafiq, thinking he will restore security. "I'm afraid Shafiq would mean another Mubarak for 30 more years."

For most of his rule, Mubarak ? like his predecessors for the past 60 years ? ran unopposed in yes-or-no referendums. Fraud guaranteed ruling party victories in parliamentary elections. Even when Mubarak let challengers oppose him in 2005 elections, he trounced his liberal rival and then jailed him.

Two weeks from now, a court is due to issue its verdict on Mubarak, 84, on trial on charges of complicity in the killing of some 900 protesters during the uprising. He also faces corruption charges, along with his two sons, one-time heir apparent Gamal and wealthy businessman Alaa.

The feeling of choosing at long last was overwhelming for some voters.

Medhat Ibrahim, 58, who suffers from cancer, waited in line at a Cairo poll.

"I might die in a matter of months. So I came for my children, so they can live," he said, breaking into tears. "We want to live better, like human beings."
