Founded in 1901, Cal Poly is one of only ?ve comprehensive polytechnic universities
in the nation, with approximately 18,000 undergraduate, 120 post-baccalaureate, and 900 graduate students. Cal Poly is a residential campus, with an on-campus population of approximately 7,000 making it the largest student-housing program in the California State University (CSU) system. U.S. News and World Report has ranked Cal Poly #1 among public master's universities in the western United States for 19 consecutive years.

At an exciting time in Cal Poly's history, under the leadership of a new President and new members of his executive team including a new Provost, Vice President for University Advancement, and several Deans, a signi?cant comprehensive campaign will soon be launched.

The University is located in San Luis Obispo, a city of 44,000, is located 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean and midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles on California's scenic Central Coast. With excellent public education resources, recreational facilities and an expanding dedication to the arts, the area has an outstanding climate, with an annual average temperature of 70.2 degrees.

The role of University Advancement (UA) is to provide a seamless and coordinated program of outreach that fosters strong relationships with internal and external partners to enhance support for Cal Poly. UA works in close collaboration with Cal Poly stakeholders, garnering the support necessary to fulfill the University's mission and accomplish its strategic goals. UA has broad responsibilities - fundraising, communications/marketing, alumni relations, and government relations, and operates in a model that requires and encourages collaboration with partners across campus.

The Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications (AVP) is part of the newly appointed Vice President for University Advancement's leadership team. The Vice President is building a team committed to a progressive and integrated program that will galvanize champions and inspire the philanthropic potential of students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff, corporations, foundations, and other friends. In an open and candid environment of collaboration each team member's broader knowledge and seasoned experience drives continuous improvement and builds alignment across the various advancement functions to achieve common goals.

At an exciting time in Cal Poly's history, under the leadership of a new President and new members of his executive team including a new Provost, Vice President for University Advancement, and several Deans, a significant multi-million dollar comprehensive fund raising campaign will soon be launched - the second comprehensive campaign in Cal Poly's history, the first campaign successfully raised $264 million ending in 2004.

The Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications (AVP) reports to the Vice President for University Advancement. The AVP is responsible for the planning, coordination, operation and management of the University's public relations and strategic communications program to communicate effectively the university's mission to its varied constituencies and ensure overall continuity of institutional brand consistency and image. The AVP works closely with academic and administrative units on the development of messages and marketing materials and media. The position is responsible for reactive and proactive media relations, the maintenance of university-wide graphics standards and production of a wide variety of physical and digital publications for both internal and external publics, for the University's online and social media presence. The person in this position selects, trains, and evaluates staff of the department, and develops and administers the department's budget. The AVP interacts with representatives of the CSU, other universities and colleges and serves on university task forces, advisory committees, and boards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A bachelor's degree in a related field. A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible professional experience, including five years of supervisory/managerial experience, in communications, marketing or a related field.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
