2013 Holocaust Essay / Art?Contest Prompt

The Nazis occupied many countries in Europe. Discuss or illustrate how people in at least one country resisted Nazi actions to deport Jewish citizens to concentration camps.

Eligibility Divisions and Prizes

Elementary School ? Grades 4-5

  • First place winner receives $75, certificate, and book
  • Second place winner receives $50, certificate, and book
  • Third place winner receives $25, certificate, and book

Middle School ? Grades 6-8

  • First place winner receives $100, certificate, and book
  • Second place winner receives $75, certificate, and book
  • Third place winner receives $50, certificate, and book

High School ? Grades 9-12

  • First place winner receives $250, certificate, and book
  • Second place winner receives $200, certificate, and book
  • Third place winner receives $150, certificate, and book

Format

Length

  • Elementary schools ? not to exceed two typed pages;
  • Middle schools ? not to exceed four typed pages;
  • High school ? not to exceed five typed pages;

Technical Details

  • Font ? 12 point New Times Roman, Double spaced on one-side of paper;
  • Page Numbers ? All pages, except for the title page, should be numbered at the top right of each page
  • Reference page ? a minimum of three references should be included on a separate page at the end of the essay. Wikipedia is not an acceptable source. This reference page is not counted as part of the essay.
  • Artwork/illustrations should not be included ? text only in the essays
  • Title Page ? Prepare a title page that includes student?s name, parent/guardian, home address, phone #, name of school, grade, and sponsoring teacher (if applicable). The student?s name should only appear on this title page.

Qualifying

  1. Essay must be received by deadline date- April 26, 2013.
  2. Essay must be original- no plagiarism
  3. Essay must adhere to prompt.
  4. This contest is open only to students from Leon, Wakulla, Jefferson, Madison, or Gadsden counties, Florida.

Judging

Essays which adhere to the guidelines will be judged with special attention to the following criteria:

  1. Clear & effective writing (essay exhibits proper use of grammar, well organized and presented).
  2. Treatment of assigned prompt .
  3. Demonstrates sensitivity to and significance of topic.
  4. Historical accuracy-all essays will be reviewed for historical accuracy.
  5. Applicants must submit the original and 3 copies of essay

Submission of Entries

Deliver or mail entries (the original and three copies) to no later than 5:00 pm April 26, 2013 to:
